Prof. Brian Yuliarto from ITB Awarded the 2024 Habibie Prize for Innovation in Engineering Sciences

Bandung – The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) has once again brought pride to the national stage. Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D., a distinguished lecturer and researcher at ITB, has been awarded the “2024 Habibie Prize” in the field of Engineering Sciences. This prestigious prize, granted by the SDM Iptek Foundation, recognizes Prof. Brian's significant contributions to advanced materials technology and nanotechnology, which have greatly benefited society.
Prof. Brian Yuliarto is renowned for his dedication in nanomaterials and biosensors. As a faculty member of the Department of Engineering Physics at the School of Industrial Technology, ITB, Prof. Brian has conducted groundbreaking research focused on developing functional materials for applications in various sectors, including healthcare, energy, and the environment. One of his major research projects includes the development of a portable biosensor for detecting the dengue virus (DENV-3) and an oxide-based gas sensor for environmental and industrial monitoring. His research not only makes a direct impact on Indonesian society but also positions Indonesia on the global research map.
In addition to his role as a lecturer, Prof. Brian also serves as the Dean of the School of Industrial Technology at ITB. Under his leadership, the school continues to encourage interdisciplinary research collaboration to produce relevant and impactful innovations. His international experience also contributes significantly to his research, including collaborations with the National Institute of Material Science (NIMS) in Japan and the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN)in Malaysia. Prof. Brian is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, expanding his research horizons and bringing a global perspective to his innovations in Indonesia.
The Habibie Prize is awarded annually to individuals or teams who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of science, technology, and innovation. Founded by the SDM Iptek Foundation, the prize commemorates and carries forward the vision of B.J. Habibie, Indonesia's third President, who is widely celebrated as the "Father of Indonesian Technology." The Habibie Prize aims to inspire scientists and professionals across Indonesia to continue innovating for the nation's progress. Prof. Brian now joins the ranks of past Habibie Prize recipients, adding to his long list of career achievements.
Before receiving the Habibie Prize, Prof. Brian was internationally recognized as one of the "World's Top 2% Scientists"by Stanford University in 2022. He was also named "Best Researcher" by ITB in 2021 and has received numerous awards for his contributions to research and technological innovation.
About Prof. Brian Yuliarto
Prof. Brian Yuliarto was born in Jakarta on July 27, 1975. He earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics at ITB, then pursued his master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Tokyo, Japan, specializing in Quantum Engineering and Systems Science. Throughout his career, Prof. Brian has been actively involved in nanotechnology and biosensor research, with numerous research findings published in leading international journals.
His dedication as a researcher extends beyond the campus. Prof. Brian has led various collaborative projects with research institutions and industries, including an innovative research program with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to develop biosensors and bio-devices for controlling tropical diseases and epidemics. He is also involved in the Productive Innovative Research Program (RISPRO) of the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), supporting the development of healthcare technology in Indonesia.
With the awarding of the 2024 Habibie Prize, Prof. Brian Yuliarto is expected to continue making significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology in Indonesia.
